Professional headshots for actors, dancers, singers and presenters are extremely important. You don’t want risk annoying your agent or manager with a bad headshot photo. Agents might be frustrated if you send out that younger looking photograph. Even worse, you might cause embarrassment to the agency.
All actors require an industry standard professional headshot of themselves for Spotlight, CastCall pro, and other submissions. It can be in standard landscape or 10×8 portrait. What is important is that professional headshots for actors are how your theatrical agency sell you to future employers in the arts and entertainment industry.
On a budget
I appreciate that some actors (especially drama students) might be on a tight budget or just simply do not have the funds to pay for a professional headshot photographer to shoot for them. Sadly, going the “selfie” route really isn’t going to work, and asking an actor friend to snap away on their new second hand eBay camera or iPhone simply won’t give you the desired results that you and your agent are going to need to sell you for that next role. It’s always worth looking for a photographer that is willing to shoot a shared drama student session. Personally speaking, if this is your first headshot session I would always opt for the personal one to one shoot. It’s your career and you need to be ready to rock and roll and be ahead of your colleagues when you leave drama school.
My best advice is to seek out a professional photographer that knows the entertainment industry and understands how your actor’s headshots should look. No point in getting a product or even a wedding photographer to shoot your images either! They simply don’t know what agents, film and television producers are looking for. As top casting director agent, Di Carling says “Professional headshots for actors are possibly the most important investment an actor can make”.
